An Osoyoos organization that helps local residents and others “take off the pounds sensibly” is celebrating 35 years.

“We’re excited to be celebrating our Chapter’s 35th Anniversary in Osoyoos,” said Barb Schwindt, Chapter Co-Leader of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), a non-profit weight-loss support group.

“(We) welcome anyone looking for weight-loss support to start or continue their weight-loss journey with us.”

The group meets year-round every Thursday morning at the Osoyoos Baptist Church (lower level).  A confidential weigh-in takes place between 10 and 10:30 and is followed by an educational meeting.

Members learn about nutrition, portion control, food planning, exercise, motivation, and more.

Men and women are welcome and snowbirds from other provinces are often part of the group as well.

The group averages 12 to 14 regular members. Visitors are welcome to attend their first TOPS® meeting free of charge and without obligation.

Maintaining a healthy body weight has many benefits for health and quality of life.

In addition to lowering the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure, it can also lower the risk of many different cancers. Other benefits include having more energy, getting better sleep, reducing sick days, feeling better about yourself and adding years on to your life.

According to many coaches and weight loss experts, joining a group or finding a weight-loss partner can increase your short- and long-term success rate.

Membership in the local chapter of TOPS is affordable at just $44 per year, plus nominal chapter fees of $2 per month.

The annual membership entitles members to access the TOPS website as well as six bi-monthly magazines packed with tips and inspiring articles.
