Following in the footsteps of former Coyotes Rainer Glimpel and Daniel Stone, Judd Repole swapped skates for sneakers Tuesday and dashed the aisles to score groceries for one lucky Osoyoos resident.
The 60-second shopping spree put a wrap to Osoyoos Buy-Low Foods’ Win Big Giveaway. It also put a freezer full of beef, turkey and even a little lamb in the home of Dorothy and Stewart McLeish.
“I didn’t believe it,” said Stewart when asked about his name being the lucky one drawn by Buy-Low manager Brian Fry. “I enter contests never expecting to win anything.
“This is a first for me and it was really good place to win.”
Indeed, it was. His Coyote stand-in carted almost $700 in groceries in the allotted 60 seconds.
“He did an awesome job,” Stewart said of Judd’s effort. “If he skates as fast as he runs, they’re going to win tonight.”
Stewart and Dorothy moved to Osoyoos just under two years ago. Their home is now a popular stop for family and friends from their native Alberta. Stewart said the meat will go on the table this summer when the house starts to fill.
“We have a big family thing in July,” he said. “But now we’ll be serving steak instead of hamburgers.”
Along with the prize of a 60-second shopping spree, the Buy-Low giveaway offered up $500,000 in prizes, with one in seven tickets winning instantly.
A similar campaign at AG Foods in Osoyoos will offer another shopping spree opportunity. The winner, date and time for that event are still to be determined.
