Atoms take over South Okanagan rinks

Penticton Bandits netminder Aiden Gabriel keeps a close eye on a puck bouncing around in his crease during a Friday afternoon contest against the Trail Dynamiters.

The Coyotes might be on the road, but Sun Bowl Arena will still see some fun hockey this weekend.

Atom-aged hockey teams from BC and Washington will be in the South Okanagan Friday through Sunday for the SOMHA’s annual Atom Recreation Hockey Tournament.

The 12-team tournament will involve both the Sun Bowl and Oliver arenas.

Two local squads — the South Okanagan Devils and South Okanagan Thunder — are involved.

The Thunder played their first game in Oliver late this afternoon. The Devils play tonight at 6:45 p.m. in Osoyoos.

The Thunder, playing in Pool B, are back on the ice Saturday at 10:15 in Osoyoos and play again in Oliver at 3:30. The Devils, playing in Pool C, play at noon in Oliver and 5:15 in Osoyoos.

The championship is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday.
