A bit of smoke darkening your days?
Earlier, we told you about some fun activities in which your family could participate, including strolls through several local museums and even a model train centre.
But if you’re a bit more active and looking for a safe indoorsy-kind-of-way to go for your run or cycle, you’ve got a number of options in Osoyoos.
We’ve got three for you — although there are likely more tucked away in local resorts and hotels.
Most athletes are probably not going to have issues with smoke posing a moderate health risk (an Air Quality health Index — AQHI — of 4-6). But the provincial Ministry of health does suggest you “consider reducing of rescheduling strenuous activities outdoors if you experience symptoms such as coughing or throat irritation.”
Nevertheless, here are some options for indoor activity.
Sonora Community Centre — The Town of Osoyoos-managed facility offers numerous indoor activities, including a weight room with limited aerobic equipment (a couple of treadmills and ellipticals and several spin and recumbent bikes.
The weight room is open from 8:30 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Saturday. It is closed on Sundays.
A single drop-in will set you back $4 ($3 if you’re 60+ or a student with a valid student card). A 10-punch pass is available for $35.
The Sonora Centre also offers a variety of drop-in sports for adults and youth. They include pickleball, basketball, soccer, floor hockey and carpet bowling.
Drop-in schedules are available at the Sonora Centre front counter or online at www.osoyoos.ca.
The Sonora Centre is located at 8505 68 Ave in Osoyoos.
Advanced Fitness Club — The downtown-located club promises a “gold standard experience at an affordable and manageable cost.”
The sleek and clean facility has four treadmills, four ellipticals, one stepper and eight bikes. If you’d rather row, you can do that too.
Owners Matt and Kate Shull also deliver spin classes, boot camp, body fit and yoga programming.
The drop-in rate is set at $7.50. A 10-day $45 pass is also available, with the unique offering of allowing the purchaser to share it with family or friends.
Advanced Fitness Club is located at 7802 85 Street in Osoyoos. Visit the club online at www.advancedfitnessclub.ca.
Vengeance Fitness — If you’re the kind who likes to grunt and groan in a grittier environment, Vengeance Fitness is for you.
Peter Kozma has brought his military background to a facility rebuilt from the ashes of a building fire. Everything is spit shine and polish, but the work ethic is definitely get down in the dirt and do it.
Vengeance delivers three treadmills and three ellipticals, three spin bikes and three standard cycles.
If the smoke isn’t too intense, you can join the team outside for crossfit in the parking lot.
Drop-in will set you back $8 per session. Or you can buy a two-week pass for $35.
Vengeance Fitness is located at 8404 97 Street, across Hwy. 97 from Buy-Low Foods.
