Council makes short work
of inaugural meeting

Osoyoos Council made short work of an inaugural meeting Monday, resolving Council responsibilities for the first year of a four-year term in about 30 minutes.

Council approved a 2019 meeting schedule that includes cancelling meetings on January 7 and August 6.

“Since the office is closed between Christmas and New Year’s there will not likely be any business ready for discussion at (the January 7 meeting) and therefore it is being recommended that it be cancelled,” explained Janette Van Vianen, the Town’s Director of Corporate Services.

“Historically, Council has also cancelled one meeting in August. It is being recommended that since the first meeting in August will fall on the BC Day Stat and the meeting would be held on Tuesday, August 6, that the August 6 meeting be cancelled.”

Mayor McKortoff said skipping the two meetings was consistent with past years.

“In the past, this is what has worked best for us and we seem to include an extra meeting if it’s necessary and it can be called,” she said.

Councillors also determined Mayor McKortoff and Coun. CJ Rhodes will continue to represent the Town on the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen board, Coun. Rhodes acting in an alternate capacity.

Coun. Brian Harvey will represent the Town on the Okanagan Regional Library board.

Other Council responsibilities include:

  • Mayor McKortoff — Hwy. 3 Coalition
  • Coun. Jim King — Airport, Age-Friendly and Accessibility, Community Services, Economic Development, Restorative Justice
  • Coun. Myers Bennett — Children and Youth, Destination Osoyoos, Municipal Insurance, School District 53
  • Coun. Rhodes — Dog Park, Waterfront
  • Coun. Harvey — Traffic Safety.

Establishing committee representation appeared to have occurred sometime prior to Monday’s meeting.

“We did have the list of all of those select and standing committees and in consultation with all of the new council we have come up with a workable distribution of people to sit on these committees,” said Mayor McKortoff before reading the assignments.

Council also established an Acting Mayor schedule, with Coun. Bennett in that capacity for the month of December.
