Have travel plans for the West Kootenay this weekend? You’ll want to steer clear of the Kootenay Lake ferry.

Due to a service cancellation, drivers and passengers planning to use the ferry this long weekend are advised to make other arrangements.

The service disruption is the result of unsuccessful contract negotiations between the BCGEU ferry workers and Western Pacific Marine Ltd. — the private ferry operator.

Following a hearing by the provincial Labour Relations Board, the BCGEU issued a 72-hour strike notice on Wednesday.

Service interruptions are expected to start on Saturday, Aug. 31. The available detour is via Hwy. 3 and Hwy. 6, although drivers should be prepared for additional travel time using that route.

The ministry has updated overhead message boards in Nelson and Creston to reflect the service disruption.
