SOAP ready to deliver story
of two buddies on a collision course

So, chances are you’ve never seen a “buddy story” like this one.

Imagine irresistible optimism meeting immovable nihilism and you’ve got a pretty good handle on the South Okanagan Amateur Players’ Lawrence & Holloman.

The cast and crew of SOAP Theatre are putting the final touches to this their third and final production of the 2018-19 season, which opens April 26 at the Venables Theatre in Oliver.

Lawrence & Holloman, written by Canadian playwright Morris Panych, is a “buddy story” with a new take and a comedic twist. It premiered at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto in late April 1998 and hasn’t slowed down since.

Lawrence — played by Vance Potter— is a loud and overconfident optimist who befriends Holloman (Jim Dinwoodie), a quiet coworker.

This comedy finds Lawrence, the happy-go-lucky suit salesman, trying to teach Holloman, a suicidal accounting clerk, how to live happily and remain positive.

Then Lawrencs’e fiancée dumps him, his car is demolished, his dog goes missing, he loses his job, and his apartment is burned to the ground — and that’s just the beginning!

Fans of dark comedy will be thrilled to learn of writer Panych’s solution.

Is happiness determined by our outlook on life? Or can our destiny be changed by another

Lawrence & Holloman is directed by Trevor Leigh and also includes appearances by Diane Gludovatz and Lisa Gludovatz.

The show will be SOAP Theatre’s entry in the 2019 Okanagan Theatre Festival. SOAP Theatre is also staging an additional performance at the Theatre BC OZone Drama Festival to be held this year in Salmon Arm on Thursday May 23.

This entry represents SOAP Theatre’s fourth year participating in this cultural event which is held all over the province.

The production opens with performances April 26, 27 and May 3 and 4 at 7.30 pm, and a Sunday matinee April 28 at 2 p.m.
