Youth Learn-to-Sail camp
returns to Lake Osoyoos in August

After a successful camp last season, the Lake Osoyoos Sailing Club is again hosting the BC Sailing Mobile Optimist Sailing School.

The camp, conducted in cooperation with BC Sailing, is a five-day Optimist dinghy sailing program that provides basic sailing instruction and teaches sail boat, safety and other skills.

Two camps are available this year — the first running August 6-10 and a second August 13-17.

It is a truly unique experience, teaching kids about boating safety and other essentials such as launching, docking, steering, balancing, and propulsion using seven-foot Optimist sailboats as well as two-person kayaks,” the club reports.

No sailing experience is necessary but students should be comfortable in and on the water while wearing a life jacket. It is open to youngsters aged six to 14 years.

Participants don’t necessarily have to have an interest in sailing, just a desire to try something new and perhaps get out of the house the last week of summer.

Cost for the five-day camp is $275 per sailor for one full week of lessons. Kidsport funding of up to $200 may be available for qualified families.
