If you have an infant named Olivia, Emma, Benjamin or Lucas, you’re not alone.

A preliminary look at the province’s most popular baby names for 2017 shows Benjamin is the front runner among baby boys and Olivia is tops among the girls.

Current information from the province’s Vital Statistics Agency — through Dec. 15 — show a tight race for the top baby name for boys born in BC in 2017.

Liam, Logan and Lucas are popular among parents so far this year, with each name just a few places behind Benjamin in the current rankings. If Benjamin can keep its lead, 2017 will be the first year it is the top boys’ name.

Among the girls, perennial favourites Olivia and Emma are lapping the field again.

For the past six years, Olivia and Emma have been the top two girls’ names. So far, the other names for girls in the top five remain Sophia, Charlotte and Ava.

Olivia, the most popular baby name in 2016, has a sizeable lead on Emma, which is in second place.

Lucas was tops among baby boys in B.C. in 2016, followed by Benjamin, Ethan, Oliver and Liam.

Final statistics will not be available until later in 2018.

For the record, there were 45,399 babies born in B.C. in 2016: 22,188 girls and 23,210 boys.

No word yet on how many babies were born in 2017.
