The weekend lineup: watch some folks get half-corked, experience the need for speed over a half-quarter or just lie around and get half-baked.
Sun-tanned, that is.
The outdoor season is warming up in Osoyoos, which means plenty of activity over the weekend to keep you, your family and those ever-pesky visiting in-laws busy.
Here’s what’s on tap this weekend:
Osoyoos Market on Main
After postponing due to rain last weekend, the Osoyoos Market on Main will try again this weekend and celebrate its grand opening. That should mean more vendors and more deals on local produce and fruit, baked goodies, crafts and even spirits — there’s always a winery, distillery, or two in attendance.
The fun starts at 8 a.m. and continues through 1 p.m. at the Town Square on Main Street.
The Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country’s Half-Corked Marathon goes Saturday morning at 8 a.m. The race was long ago sold out, but you can still get in on the fun with the Party! At the Finish Line party.
The party goes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oliver Community Park. General admission of the Finish Line area is free, but if you have friends and family who would like to participate in the wine tasting and enjoy lunch as well you (or they) can purchase a Finish Line Wine Tasting ticket.
The $20 Finish Line Wine Tasting Ticket includes three tasting tokens, and souvenir wine glass. Extra wine tokens can be purchased at the event for $1 each.
There will be a couple of food trucks on site for those who are looking for something to eat.
Wine Country Drag Racing
Sunday morning, bring your lawn chairs, sun screen and cactus-comfy shoes to Richter Pass Motorplex (or RPM) located at the Osoyoos Airport property on Hwy 3 just west of town.
The dragsters are back for another day of quick sprints down the 1/8-mile track (or half a quarter mile).
Gates open at 9 a.m., with time trials scheduled for 10. The actual racing — two cars side-by-side down an 1/8-mile track — begins at 1 p.m.
Tickets are just $10 for adults and kids 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult.
Enjoy a nightcap
A couple of local musical events to note:
Tinhorn Creek Vineyard continues its 2016 Summer Concert Series with the Pernell Reichert Band playing Saturday evening.
Pernell’s style of guitar playing has been described as high energy with fast finger picking numbers that keep the listener intrigued and entertained by his musical talent.
Tickets are $30 plus GST and available from the Winery at 250-498-3743 or www.tinhorn.com/concerts
Shuttles are available from Osoyoos and Penticton and cost $20 per person return and must be booked in advance.
No chairs allowed. Blankets and cushions are welcome. No outside alcohol permitted. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are non-refundable.
Closer to Town, Jojo’s Cafe will host Sanaz Busink and Misty Rose Knol Saturday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Misty Rose plays flute and piccolo. Sanaz Busink is the featured painter.
And the weather?
Oh, yeah, we mentioned doing a little sun-tanning this weekend. Half-baked is about all you’re going to get, Osoyoos. We’re looking at partly cloudy skies through Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the low 20s.
The real heat returns mid-week, when we’re expecting sunny skies in highs in the low-30s.
