Gyro Park will get its funk on this evening as Music in the Park brings the Darlene Ketchum Quartet to town.

The quartet plans to perform well-known covers, soul, jazz standards, R&B funk and some original tunes.

The Quartet’s namesake, Darlene Ketchum, provides vocals. She is also an experienced songwriter, arranger, teacher and choral & musical director.

The Vancouver-based quartet also includes Kelvin Ketchum (keyboard), Gerry Teichrob (bass) and Tyler Friesen (drums).

“Soul/Gospel/Funk is the music I have always connected to on such a deep level,” says Darlene. “It is the music that pumps my heart, makes it skip, touches my spirit and helps me connect to God, family, friends and the rest of creation.”

Darlene started singing solos in church at the age of three, and found her musical passion a few years later in the soul, gospel, funk, and jazz music of the 1970’s.

Darlene released a first solo CD — Soul Connections (Extended Edition) — in October 2014.  Her Christmas song, Joy! Joy to the World, was nominated for the 2013 Word Guild Best Lyrics Award.  Her song, I Will Not Be Shaken, was nominated for Urban Song of the Year by the 2014 Gospel Music Association of Canada – Covenant Awards.

The free concert is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. If weather becomes an issue, the concert will move to the Royal Canadian Legion Hall on 78 Avenue.
