Rainer Glimpel had a breakaway of a different sort this morning.
The Osoyoos Coyotes captain and KIJHL’s leading scorer assisted on Osoyoos resident Kay Patterson’s goal of filling a shopping cart full of groceries.
Mrs. Patterson was the winner of a 50-second shopping spree courtesy of Osoyoos Buy-Low Foods as part of the supermarket chain’s 50th Anniversary Giveaway Promotion.
After hearing she had won, Mrs. Patterson did a little reconnaissance and quickly determined she might need a little help.
“I certainly knew I couldn’t run,” she laughed. “It took me 30 seconds just to get to the end of the aisle.”
She contacted the store and explained she was at best “a fast walker.”
“Thankfully they arranged for the Coyotes to send a runner for me.”
Enter Mr. Glimpel, who arrived this morning sporting his Coyotes hockey jersey and a big smile.
The contestants talked strategy and then it was game time.
Glimpel quickly checked his way down the coffee aisle, making a quick deke to grab a few bags of premium java, then turned on the jets and bore down on the meat.
There it was a long shift of wrestling turkeys, roasts and boxes of chicken breasts into several carts.
When the whistle finally sounded, Glimpel had packed away just under $499 of groceries.
“That was amazing,” said Mrs. Patterson. “We were right at the limit.”
The effort earned the young Coyote Mrs. Patterson’s game star and a quick kiss on the cheek.
Along with the prize of a 50-second shopping spree, the Buy-Low giveaway offered up $385,000 in prizes, with one in seven tickets winning instantly.
