Sega has shared a first look at Sonic’s new ‘Open Zone’ adventure vocal boundaries Over the past few weeks, via an exclusive deal with IGN.
These previews have raised a number of concerns about the current state of the game, but blue camouflage fans have now been urged to calm down. In case you missed it, IGN’s latest roundup of Sonic footage revealed what the gameplay was like in Preview the “hands on” It is actually of an early build.
IGN Senior Editorial Producer Mitchell Saltzman explains this succinctly during a new eight-minute clip — starting with a reference to sonic adventure “Open Your Heart” by Japanese-American rock band Crush 40:
“If you’re worried about how blue blur appears in this uncommon genre, I think Crush 40 is the best – open your heart, it’ll be fine.”
Later, in the same preview, Saltzman asserts that the footage is from an “early build” while simultaneously admitting that there is some degree of clash between objects (including how they “look”) and the art’s very naturalistic style—hoping to improve upon it in the latest edition of The game and “beyond”:
“…of course, it is worth emphasizing that this gameplay and the version I played were from an early build.”
Despite some issues, IGN believes Sonic Team has “hit a winning formula” and while there appears to be “work to be done” ahead of its holiday release later this year, the outlet is confident that Sonic can move into an open world. Experience:
Ultimately, my time with this early build answered the one question I had in mind – will Sonic’s unique gameplay translate into an open world? The answer is absolutely resounding.”
in tweetSaltzman also made a few things clear – explaining how IGN footage wasn’t made available for certain parts of the game, and went on to highlight a point from his written review On how “exciting” the Frontiers’ gameplay structure is for him:
“Sonic must hunt down and defeat these bosses in order to collect portal gears, which open portals that lead to linear miniature stages, done in the style of previous Sonic games, giving Sonic Frontiers a great mix of old and new styles. These classic levels all come with a number of Few optional goals, such as beating the level in a certain time, collecting all the red rings, etc., with each goal rewarding you with a vault key, which is necessary to unlock the desired chaos emerald. “
And in some follow-up tweets, he gave more details about the game’s path:
Mainly game flow: Explore the open world > Solve puzzles to unlock the map > Find collectibles to improve stats > Fight world bosses to earn Portal Gears > Use Portal Gears to unlock Linear Sonic Levels > Complete Linear Sonic Levels to unlock Emerald Mayhem
“From what I’ve played so far, it’s a very strong gameplay loop. There’s obviously a lot of work to be done, as I speak in the preview, but I think in terms of structure, Sonic Team has something with Frontiers. It just needs To a lot of polishing.”
What are your impressions so far of the Sonic Frontiers previews? How do you feel when you know this footage is from an “early creation”? Do you expect more from the final design, or are you ready to step back from any serious judgment until Sega reveals more about Sonic’s new 3D adventure?
