Canada will label every cigarette with a warning about health risks

Toronto (Canada), June 10 (EFE) .- Canada announced Friday that it will become the first country in the world to force every cigarette sold in the country to be labeled with caution about the dangers posed by tobacco.Canadians.

Cigarette personal labeling will, in principle, be limited to the message “poison in every puff” that may take effect by the end of 2023.

Caroline Bennett, Canada’s Minister for Mental Health and Addiction, said today that personal cigarette labeling would add to the two-decade-old requirement to include photos of diseases caused by tobacco.

Prior to the move, the Canadian government will open a 75-day consultation period from Saturday in which all Canadians can participate to add their views.

Bennett added that the message printed on cigarettes may change after hearing the opinions of Canadians.

During a press conference, the Canadian Minister announced that the personal labeling of cigarettes would allow health messages to reach all consumers, “including young people who frequently smoke cigarettes one by one” so they would not see the warnings on the packages.

Heart & Stroke, president of the Canadian Cardiac Society, Duck Roth, praised the Canadian government’s decision.

Roth said in a statement that cigarettes are deadly substances and that the measure “will help young people and non-smokers reduce their attraction, as well as help smokers quit.”

According to data from Heart & Stroke, smoking kills approximately 48,000 people each year in Canada. EFE
