The Canadian baseball family is shocked: one of the greatest players of all time, Amanda Ace, has died in a ski accident in Nelson, British Columbia.
Asek, 33, was a longtime serving member of the women’s national team, where he served as an all-star right-handed player and first paceman.
A native of Prince George City, she joined the national team in 2005 and was a key member of the Canadian team that won five WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup medals, including bronze in 2006, 2012 and 2018 and silver in 2008 and 2016.
Asay was part of Canada’s historic silver medalist at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto – the first time women baseball was inserted into a continental multi-sport game.
The corona virus infection prevented Ace from seeing his virtues on the field again, so his last World Cup mission will be in the summer of 2018 in Florida’s Veera, which won the championship following Chinese Taipei and Canada.
In a statement, the Canadian Federation expressed signs of the pain of the tragedy.
Andre Lachans of Baseball Canada, who coached Assoc on various national teams between 2005 and 2018, said: “This is very difficult news.
“Above all, he’s a great person and he will make a lasting impact not only on the national team program, but on everyone who is lucky enough to meet him,” Lachans said.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors and the National Office of Baseball Canada, I extend my deepest condolences to Amanda’s parents, Loris and George, and her brother, Brad,” said President and CEO Jason Dixon. “Her contributions to women’s baseball and our national team will be remembered forever and will be an inspiration to future generations.”
Ace holds a bachelor of science degree for three seasons (2006-2009) in ice hockey and softball for Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He continued his studies at the University of British Columbia, where he earned a master’s degree in science and forestry and played for the Thunderbirds hockey team for two years.
But it was baseball that caught her completely. At his first World Cup in Taiwan in 2006, Ace was the only Canadian player to make the All-Star team’s first base. He also received the Most Valuable Player Award for his national team.
In 2016, he was also selected as MVP, but this time he defeated Chinese Taipei 2-1 in the semifinals to advance to the final of the World Cup against Japan in Busan, South Korea.
In August 2017, she was ranked seventh in the rankings of the top 10 female baseball players in the world of baseball America. She was the only Canadian on that list.
Between 2017 and 2018, Ace played baseball in Australia for six months in the five-team Melbourne-based men’s league.
Ace was raised to coach his national team in order to play in this year’s World Cup qualifiers. The 2020 edition scheduled to take place in Mexico has been suspended due to the epidemic.
Ace reportedly died Jan. 7 at Goodney Lake Hospital in Nelson as a result of injuries sustained when he fell into a tree while skiing.
A “tree pit”, also known as a “fir trap”, is a space around a tree that does not receive the same amount of snow as the surrounding open space. This creates a vacuum under the branches and around the trunk, which is dangerous for hikers, skiers and skiers. . The situation is most dangerous when the fall in the well is upside down.
