Cherry Hill, NJ (CBS) – More than 75 gas stations across New Jersey are slashing fuel prices Friday in an effort to promote self-service. It’s all part ofFuel Your Way New JerseyThat supports the Motorists’ Fuel Choice and Comfort Act that would allow New Jersey residents the option to pump their own gas if they so desired.
Supporters of the legislation say drivers could save anywhere from $100 to $400 a year if the state allows self-catering.

“With gas prices continuing to rise, it’s taking a bigger and bigger share of people’s wallets,” said Sal Risalvato of Fuel Your Way, New Jersey. “We want the public to know that one of the fastest ways we can lower gas prices is to allow gas stations the ability to provide self-service in New Jersey.”
Risalvato adds that gas stations are having a hard time hiring staff to fully operate all of their pumps. As a result, motorists often get annoyed when they have to wait in long lines for the few open pumps.
This is a huge debate in New Jersey. Most surveys show that people don’t have to pump the gas themselves, but one group wants you to reconsider.
Some say a little taste of luxury in New Jersey – sitting in your car and waiting while the gas makes its way into your tank.
I pumped it myself but I’d prefer not to. I guess I’m spoiled, I’m a jersey girl. What is that, your gas pump? ‘ said Myriam Lalwani in Cherry Hill.
On Friday, the New Jersey Gasoline, Sea-Store, Automobile Association is conducting a trial, so to speak. Seventy-seven gas stations will cut their prices to show how much people can save if they pump their own gas.
“They will lower the price at their pumps by the amount they think they will be able to discount gasoline from every day,” Risalvato said.
Risalvato leads this. He says legislation to make it illegal to pump gas yourself costs people 10 to 15 cents an extra gallon. He responded to officials who doubt that the savings will be spent.
“It’s impossible not to pass on the savings because of the competition,” Risalvato said.
“That’s cool. I mean, everywhere else in the country I know about you can do your gas. You don’t just save money, you save time because you don’t have to wait for an attendant,” Tom Ochter said.
Risalvato does not expect people to lose their jobs because they have already seen a shortage of gas workers.
