This applies in full force to today’s phones. Of course, we’re talking about the usual suspects, the best-known offerings from Apple, Samsung, Google and OnePlus, which are usually among the best cameras out there, as they combine versatile cameras with interesting software features.
Without further ado, let’s go!
scene 1
This is a regular daytime scene captured at a local children’s playground. The photo was taken in the late afternoon, the sunshine on this castle slide made the colors pop, and I couldn’t resist taking a few photos.
scene 2
This is an opportunity to test the very broad capabilities of each phone. I tried to capture as much drag along with that smaller baby chip, and as you can see, some phones did an objectively better job at that.
scene 3
Despite the hardware differences in all four phones, the details are almost impeccable in all the photos. Just look how “sharp” the fir leaves are, literally and figuratively!
scene 4
Macro photography has gradually become an important aspect of today’s hottest phones, as each of them is capable of capturing an amazing close-up shot of a plant or an insect. Some of the phones in this comparison use different tricks to achieve better focus at close distances. For example, the iPhone and Galaxy cleverly switch to their ultra-wide cameras because they focus at closer distances at the expense of a background that has less bokeh and isn’t creamy.
Scene 5
Now, using each phone’s dedicated telephoto lens will quickly reveal who’s in our blind camera comparison, especially to the richer eye. That’s why I used a 3.5X zoom feature on all phones to capture this typical photo, because it’s not native to any of the telephoto lenses: The iPhone 13 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra both have 3X zoom lenses, the OnePlus uses a 3.3X, and the Pixel 6 Pro 4X telephoto lens. Compromise had to be made.
