Russia claims it will allow civilians to evacuate despite not abiding by previous agreements

Evacuation of dead residents: A Russian military raid hit an evacuation crossing point in a Kyiv suburb on Sunday, killing a family with two children and several other civilians trying to flee the Russian invasion, according to the city’s mayor.

Ukrainian authorities said that two mortar or artillery shells hit a checkpoint in the suburb of Irbin, northwest of Kyiv, which has been heavily bombed by the Russian army in recent days.

The mayor of Irben, Oleksandr Markushin, said eight civilians were killed across the area, and international media filming at the checkpoint reported that a shell landed while a torrent of civilians was pouring in.

Fiery Zelensky: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of planning “deliberate murder” in the bombing of Ukrainian territory. Speaking in a Facebook video on Sunday, Zelensky added that “God will not forgive” on Yom Kippur.

Zelensky said he had not heard of any allies on Sunday.

“And I have not heard any reaction from any world leader today. Not from any Western politician. There are no reactions to this declaration. Think about the sense of impunity for the occupiers: they announce planned atrocities. Why?”

Nuclear concerns: French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the safety of nuclear power plants in Ukraine, according to the Kremlin’s recitation of the call.

Macron also spoke with Zelensky afterwards, stressing “the absolute necessity to avoid any attack on the safety of Ukraine’s civilian nuclear facilities.”

Russia steps up its offensive A senior US defense official said Russia has fired a total of 600 missiles since the start of the invasion of Ukraine, and Russia has committed about 95% of its combined combat power inside Ukraine.

The official said the United States noted continued fighting in Kherson and Mykolaiv on Monday, and Russian forces were still trying to encircle Kyiv, Khakhiv and Chernihiv, as well as Mariupol.

Anti-war protests: At least 4,640 people were arrested in Russia on Sunday for participating in anti-war rallies across the country, according to the independent human rights watchdog group that tracks the detentions.

Protesters in Saint Petersburg, Russia were badly beaten by police, according to videos posted on social media. CNN has geolocated and verified the videos, which were taken on Sunday evening.

Withdrawal of companies: Netflix said on Sunday that it will stop selling and offering the video streaming service in Russia for the time being. Major Hollywood studios have also postponed releases of new films in the country. Earlier on Sunday, TikTok and American Express also suspended service within Russia.
