Downtown excavation claims additional parking spots

The east end of downtown Main Street will be without even more parking this morning after the company planting upgraded sewer lines recognized a serious safety hazard.

Parking on the south side of Main Street between Spartan Drive and 85th Street — between Shoppers Drug Mart and O’Delights —  is being “interrupted” today and may face additional interruptions on an “as-needed basis for the duration of the project.”

“We had hoped to keep this parking available for the duration of the project,” H&M Excavating wrote in a notice posted on the Town of Osoyoos website Thursday afternoon.

“Unfortunately, because the traffic is alternating direction, it has become a safety concern with parked cars backing out.”

Reportedly, a motorist was backing out of a stall and found him or herself grill-to-grill with vehicles headed west in the east-bound lane.

H&M is digging up the north side of Main Street between 85 St. and Spartan Drive to place pipe that will better move excessive rainfall to the lake.

H&M’s work has already brought the temporary loss of parking spaces on the north side of the block.

The $630,000 project includes placing storm sewer pipe along Main Street, adding manholes and catch basins and finishing with some curb improvements in the form of “bump-outs” on all four corners of 85 Street.

H & M hopes to have the work completed by the end of April.
