Headed to the Coast this weekend?
You’ll want to be aware of mudslides that have closed Hwy. 1 in both directions between Hope and Bridal Falls just east of Chilliwack.
The province expects it will have one lane open to alternating traffic by noon today with a full opening of both lanes by Saturday afternoon.
Until then, it could be slow-going.
The three mudslides have brought geotechnical engineers to the scene to review the area. Highway crews and heavy equipment are now beginning to clean up and start removing the large amounts of debris covering the highway in both directions. Extra equipment and staff have been brought to support the cleanup efforts.
Crews will be focused on clearing the westbound lanes first to re-open the highway and to establish counterflow traffic movement on the west side of the highway, the province says.
Following the opening of the westbound lane, crews will turn their attention to clearing the eastbound lane, which has considerably more debris.
An alternate route to the Lower Mainland would be to take Hwy. 1 north from Hope and then Hwy. 7 west.
Motorists are advised to check DriveBC before they set out and plan an alternate route.
