A local farm will be trying something a little different this season — allowing customers to pick their own strawberries.
Prana Farms, located on the East Bench, plans to open the gates Saturday mornings between 9 a.m. and noon — including this Saturday — and Tuesday afternoons between 3 and 6 p.m. to customers who would like to pick their own strawberries.
The farm says it may open for additional pickings when it is at the peak of its crop.
Limited amounts of pre-picked strawberries will also be available for sale during U-Pick times.
“These will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis,” the farm says. “We will also have some other produce available for sale such as rhubarb (available now) and raspberries and cherries (coming soon).”
The early-season U-picks are especially good for customers wantign to pick smaller amounts — 10 lbs. or less — for quick gobbling.
“If you are wanting large amounts of strawberries (15 lbs. or more) for freezing, jam, etc., the best time to come will be during the peak of our crop in a couple of weeks,” the farm says.
The strawberries are June-bearing varieties but short-lived. The strawberry season is usually about a month long.
Prana says its strawberries are unsprayed.
Prana is located at the intersection of 25 St. and 52 Ave. The best route to access the farm is to turn on to 62 Ave. from Hwy. 3. Continue around the corner as 62 Ave. turns into 25 St. The farm is to your left at the intersection of 52 Ave.
A Prana Farm sign is located on the fence beside the horse pasture.
Children are welcome to come but must be supervised. The farm asks for pets to be left at home.
“This is our first year offering a U-Pick, so please bear with us if there are any hiccups! We aim to provide everyone with a fun picking experience and an appreciation for fresh, local, sustainable produce.”
