Fire forces six families from apartment building

A fire at the El Dorado Manor apartment building on 89 Street has forced six Osoyoos families from their homes.

A kitchen fire in an Osoyoos apartment this afternoon has six families looking for temporary lodgings.

Residents of El Dorado Manor, located at 7206 89 Street, were forced from the apartment building around 3 p.m. after a fire in one of the units a half hour earlier.

“It was contained to one suite, except for smoke in the others,” said Osoyoos Fire Chief Rick Jones.

“The guys went in with one line with our compressed air foam,” he said. “It was pretty much confined to the cupboards. They knocked it down right away. In less than five minutes, they gave me an all-clear.”

Despite the department’s quick response, a resident in the building said he and his roommate were asked to leave the building. He says they weren’t told when they could return or who would be covering their costs while they were out of the building.

The building was re-keyed to keep tenants from returning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
