Minor baseball in Osoyoos got a major boost from town council on Monday as its request for more than $6,000 for start-up costs was among $62,000 in Community Service Grants approved by council.

The Osoyoos Minor Baseball Association will use the grant to buy two portable pitching mounds and a pitching machine. The league expects to include about 100 players in five age divisions.

Mayor Sue McKortoff said, “I’m happy that we have someone willing to run a baseball league after 15 years.”

To provide the association the grant and still stay within budget, council moved two items from the community grants list to the Resort Municipalities Initiative budget: including $1,500 for the Desert Park Exhibition Society jousting event; and $3,126 for the Osoyoos Lake Water Quality Society’s Lake Appreciation Day.

Other notable grant recipients:

  • $6,000 for the Osoyoos Festival Society
  • $6,000 to Osoyoos Royalty Committee
  • $6,000 for Canada Day fireworks
  • $5,550 for the International Curling Society
  • $4,000 to the Desert Sun Counseling and Resource Centre
  • $5,000 to South Okanagan Minor Hockey Association
  • $3,000 for hall upgrades at the Osoyoos Senior Centre
