2024 QB CJ Carr, grandson of legendary Michigan soccer coach Lloyd Carr, commits to Notre Dame

Notre Dame and Michigan have had competition for years on the field, and now the Irish can claim a unique recruiting win against the Wolverines as quarterback 2024 CG Carr made his commitment to them on Thursday.

Carr is the grandson of former Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr and the son of former Wolverines quarterback Jason Carr. He’s a 6-foot-3, 195-pound quarterback from Saline High School in Saline, Michigan, near Ann Arbor, and will play college football in South Bend, Indiana.

“He’s been telling my family I’ve been going to Notre Dame since last spring,” Carr told ESPN. “[This past] Sunday [on a visit] It was really when I told my dad that there was no chance for anyone else, I’d go to Notre Dame. “

Carr received his first college offers from Michigan and then Michigan State shortly after his last football game. His father didn’t tell him Michigan offered at first, trying to let his son finish the season. But as soon as the Spartans jumped, he told him both grants.

The summer he entered his sophomore year, he made visits across the Midwest and Big Ten, then really began to take his assignment seriously once the sophomore season was over.

“I did some spring visits, and after my really spring visits, I knew I wanted to go to Notre Dame,” Carr said. “My dad would make me stop a little bit so I could see everything that was out there and really get all the opportunities that were being offered. After the last camp in Notre Dame, we were supposed to go south and I was like, ‘Dad, I know where I want to go, and I’ve I was allowed to commit. “

Despite links with the Michigan program, his family had been supporting him in creating his own path and choosing the school that best suited him. His parents would guide him along the way, allowing him to experience the whole process and make his own decision.

Carr says his grandfather, who was Michigan’s head coach from 1995 to 2007 and coached the Wolverines in a national championship in 1997, was supportive and enthusiastic about his decision.

“He loves it. We got it [Notre Dame] Carr said he loves Coach Reese and Coach Freeman and the things we said to him, he’s really happy. “I got my dad a shirt that says Notre Dame dad, but my grandfather is just a Notre Dame shirt.”

It wasn’t easy making that decision to go elsewhere than the school he grew up around, but Carr wanted to make sure he made his college decision for the right reasons and not just because his family is connected to a program. With his family’s blessing, he found Notre Dame as the best school for him and did not hesitate in this decision.

“Michigan will obviously hold a close place in my heart forever, we are the Michigan family,” Carr said. “Our family foundation is run across Michigan, so Michigan will always hold a close place in my heart.” “But, I never wanted to go to university near my hometown and wanted to travel a little further. Notre Dame was the perfect place for me and I thought I had a chance to do something special there with the right people.”
