Toronto (Canada) (AFP) – In a fantastic round of 62 shots, under eight, American golfer Tony Finav took the lead at defending champion Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy at the Canada Open on Saturday.
Finaw, 32, matched the lowest round of his entire U.S. touring career on Saturday at St George’s Golf and Country Club outside Toronto.
The Utah golfer, ranked 18th in the PGA rankings, stunned the Canadian crowd with an eagle and seven birds.
“I didn’t finish the way I wanted to yesterday,” Finaw said of the two bogeys he made at the end of his run on Friday.
“I think I was on fire to get to it today,” said the American, who is chasing his third PGA title and the first in August 2021 after The Northern Trust.
Finav will begin the decisive day of the competition with former world number one Rory McIlroy, who signed the 65-stroke (-5) card on Saturday.
The winner of the 2019 event, the Northern Irish player is the defender of the current title as the following editions have been canceled due to the Govt-19 epidemic.
American Justin Thomas, the new winner of the PGA Championship in May, is third on the team, two strokes behind the leaders.
World number one Scottish Scheffler of the United States dropped to 29th on Saturday with 71 strokes (+1), while second-ranked Spain’s John Rahm did not compete in the event.
The first Latin American player in the classification was Colombian Sebastian Munoz, who is ranked ninth, with five strokes from the head.
