Medvedev removes Harkas and is in the Canadian semifinals

TORONTO (AP) – Canadian senior Daniel Medvedev advanced to the semifinals on Friday after beating seventh-seeded Hubert Harkas.

The Russians won the pole 2-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5) and will face American John Isner, who defeated Frenchman Gale Monfils 7-6 (5), 6-4 (11th seed). The last game of the day.

Medvedev, 25, and second in the rankings, has amassed 11 titles on the ATP Tour. This year, he was crowned in Mallorca and Marseille.

A month after losing to Pole in the fourth round at Wimbledon, he hit 23 aces to beat Hurgas.

“He had chances, he was great for at least two sets, of course, but it was tennis,” Medvedev said. “We both have excellent services. I hit some aces when I needed it most.”

Earlier, Stefanos Chitsibas defeated Caspar Root 6-1, 6-4.

Chitsibas took a 5-0 lead and won the first set in 23 minutes. Rudd returned to second, maintaining his service and speed against the opponent with accurate shots.

Greek Chitsibas finally broke the serve with a deep shot to take the lead 5-4. He completed the victory in 74 minutes with the eighth card of the match.

“Every opponent I have to face has been a better player in the past … and I handled those situations better,” the winner commented.

This Saturday, Sisyphus faced American Reilly Opelka, who defeated Spanish Roberto Batista Aguirre 6-3, 7-6 (1) in the quarterfinals.

Sisyphus, ranked third and third in the world, lost to Novak Djokovic in the final of the French Open in May. He reached the Canadian Masters final in 2018, where he lost to Rafael Nadal.

“He played well. The second set was a bit tough,” said Sabalenga. “I’m so glad he reacted at the end of the set to win.”

Sabalenga will face Czech Carolina Bliskova, who defeated Spain’s Sarah Soribes Tormo 6-4, 6-0 in the semifinals on Saturday.

In another quarterfinal match, Camilla Giorgi of Italy defeated the American Coco Coff 6-4, 7-6 (2). He will face another American, Jessica Bekula, who defeated the Tunisian Ones Jabiur (13th seed) 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-0.
