Nadal works quickly for Isner
It is enough once to knock down Rafael Natale on the clay field.
Throughout his career, Nadal did not miss consecutive games on his preferred surface, and advanced to the third round of the Italian Open, defeating Spain’s John Isner 6-3, 6-1.
Nadal lost to 19-year-old Carlos Alcaras in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open last week. After the first leg of the first round, he advanced 44-0 in clay matches.
Perhaps most importantly, Nadal regained some confidence as he recovered from a sidelined rib six weeks before the match in Madrid.
Although he wants to add his 10 Italian Open titles, Nadal’s biggest goal is to get back to his best form in time for the French Open, which starts in two weeks. Nadal has won 13 of the 21 Grand Slam titles held at Roland Garros.
The competition with Isner was basically determined in the short term.
Nadal struggled through his serve 3-3 in the first set, missing a forehand and then double-failing to give Isner break points. But on the chance to break the break point the American player made unavoidable mistakes and eventually Nadal retained.
In the next match, the 6-foot-10 American knocked out Nadal Isner when he missed a powerful forehand kick into the net. Nadal then continued in love to close the first set, beating Isner in the opening game of the second set.
“I finished better than I started, no doubt,” Nadal said. “He had some chances to come back. I was on his hands then. Fortunately he missed those shots.”
Next, Shapovalov faces the Canadian player.
Next, Nadal meets Canadian Denis Shapovalo, who had a tough win in three sets as the Spaniard saved two match points at the same point last year.
Referring to Shapovalov’s game last year, Nadal said, “Good luck.” “I know how dangerous it is. I want to play better than I do today.”
Alexandre Sverev, the runner-up who lost to Algiers in the Madrid final on Sunday, defeated Sebastian Pace 7-6 (6) 6-3 to end Argentina’s eight-match winning streak.
In the women’s singles, 2019 French Open semifinalist Amanda Anisimova defeated Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic 7-6 (5), 6-1, while Croatia’s Petra Martic defeated fifth seed Annette Kontaveit 6-2, 6-3. Defeated.
Finalist Jessica Begula advanced to Madrid, while Anilina Kalinina withdrew from the match with an upper back injury. He will next face third-seeded Arena Sabalenka of the United States.
Clear the chitchat
Stefanos Tsitsipas saved two match points and took the lead.
Tsitsipas defeated Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (4), but the Bulgarian struggled after suddenly finding his rhythm in the second set.
Dimitrov, playing in the Chitsipas tournament, won four games in a row and burst into love to go into the third set.
Dimitrov took the set points 5-4, 6-5, but the fourth-ranked Greek saved both and forced a tie-break to take a 5-0 lead before taking the lead.
“Incredible fight, I’m so glad I was able to overcome this hurdle,” Chitsibas said. “Gregor played well and I had a bad time on the field.
“The fact that I was able to overcome it all and recover strongly in the third set tiebreak is a great way for me to deal with it.”
Second-seeded Alexander Sverev, who lost in the final in Madrid over the weekend, advanced to the 16th round, beating Argentina’s Sebastian Pace 7-6 (6), 6-3.
